Gavin Calf has been invited to represent South Africa at the prestigious 7th Florence Biennale in December 2009, an event widely recognised as the world's most comprehensive exhibition of contemporary art, taking place every two years in the historical Fortezza da Basso - the ancestral home of the De Medici dynasty of Michelangelo fame in Florence, Italy. Gavin is one of only 860 artists from 90 different countries selected to exhibit their work at the ten-day event that attracts more than 17 000 visitors worldwide. Past winners of the top award – called the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” after the Patron of Renaissance Arts, Lorenzo de' Medici, also known as the Magnificent – include Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Alfredo Zalce and David Hockney.
In collaboration with the United Nations, the Biennale is also an official participant in the “Dialogue Among Civilizations” programme. Throughout the ten-day biennale, functions and lectures are held to promote international dialogue, “so it is not a commercial exhibition as such, but more like a world, cultural convention.”
The opportunity to exhibit at an international Biennale such as Florence, the seat of the Renaissance is a huge boost towards recognition as a master.
